Making the big boys work
Thursday, May 20, 2010 - Race Reports
Making the break wasn't part of the plan, but sometimes you just have to race. I'm a bit tired so it'll just be ramblings tonight.

I was right behind the "Lance crash." He was a couple wheels ahead of me and I was surprised to see him so far back. It wasn't long before the RadioShack guys got together to move him and Levi up.

A minute later there was a boom on the left and I swerved right. Headed for the dirt and stopped right in front of a car. I was lucky. My roommate Dan was not, he crashed hard and had to pull out at the feed zone.

As for the break, I was just moving up like a good bike racer when someone attacked right in front of me. And that became the move.

Mark Renshaw was a bit upset I made it since I was only 1:40 down on GC. "Let's drop this F***er," he said. He wasn't very nice to me all day. Not a fan anymore.

Everyone knew the break wouldn't stay away with me up there. Can you imagine, a domestic team taking the jersey away from Garmin? They have way too much pride for that.

The break started playing games early, that sucked. I lost my snap a few days ago so was having trouble following attacks.

I clawed myself back on a few times but the catch was inevitable. As the group came flying past, I got a thumbs up from Big George. That was cool. Of course he could have been telling me to get behind him and out of his way.

Well, it was cool to be the one off the front forcing the field to chase today. Screw the Pro Tour teams, there are no easy days!

Screw Renshaw and his "Bitter Bitch face!" :) Great racing man! Keep it up! AJ said that he saw you right before you hit Howell the other day. He was so stoked to be out there cheering you guys on. We were at the finish in Modesto too. Super friggin' cool man...

Great work today Paul! I couldn't get any work done all afternoon thanks to following you on-line. So many of us would have loved to see your group make it and you in the leader's jersey. Good luck for the rest of it!

Yeah. I knew you'd get caught cause you suck like a vacuum. That's probably what big george was telling you.

Great racing Paul! Know that all the Davis community is watching daily and behind you and cheering for you! When the 'biggies'start talking crap about/to you, you know you are onto something big! Smile and Go with it mate! Tackle that Big Bear tomorrow! All the best from Davis!

Did my other post get erased? Anyway, it was fun to see you today. The commentators were right in surmising that they were trying to drop you because you were too high up on G.C. You looked gassed at the end but I guess that'd be expected with all the work you did. Anyway, awesome job today.

Great Job Paul you are making it a better race. It is good to see it not dominated by one team. Good luck today and go slay the bear..

As the Germanic Barbarian's line said in the movie Gladiator just before the Romans trounced, "Eh Flec De Hur!" - and with that voice of defiance, charge the Bear but do not suffer their fate. Ride on you phenom!

Nice riding! You looked strong in the break- surprised to see Renshaw jump away so early- if you guys had been able to work together and sprint it out he would have been much better off.

Does anyone have a link to online video for the full stage 5 ride, rather than just highlights? It was a great stage.

Paul, Absolutely awesome watching you race yesterday! You responded to so many attacks and kept the everyone in the group honest to the finish. I was hoping so bad (and knowing they wouldn't allow it) for the lead group to make it to the finish! http:// It's been fun watching the tour, keep pushing! Hope you and Sara are doing well out west!

Renshaw being a jerk showed just how small his balls are and how big a threat you were in the break.

Like the scene in Breaking Away with the Italian riders. I don't get why you didn't win most courageous yesterday!
